Public Sector

Ireland has developed a strong cluster of software companies providing technology and support services to meet the needs of public sector organisations. Irish companies now provide solutions to local government, semi-state and federal government, and to health services. Software solutions delivered include business process management, case management systems, GIS solutions, and infrastructure, payment and security solutions.
Irish software companies selling to the public sector number almost 300, employing over 3,000 people. These companies are augmented by a significant body of expertise in research and public tendering from third level colleges and from consultants.

Growth Areas

Enterprise Ireland has identified the following areas as presenting growth opportunities over the next 5 years:

  • Enterprise solutions including records and document management systems.
  • Security and privacy solutions including regulatory compliance and legislative applications.
  • Business process management, including business intelligence tools.
  • Collaboration and productivity tools, including people, time and project management applications.
  • Strong opportunities will also exist in the delivery of software through new business models such as software as a service.


In Australia / New Zealand

The delivery of software solutions into the ANZ region accounts for more than 50% of the total exports from Ireland and exceeds some A$200m per annum.

Irish companies have demonstrated particular capability in the implementation of solutions that address biometric identity assurance for our nations borders,(Daon), social enterprise management for agencies(Curam), e-learning & training solutions and a range of professional consultancy and IT solutions for the healthcare sector to name but a few.
